Pilots speak out against “4-eye rule” – EASA amends its recommendation

Last year, following the crash of the 9525 GW flight, many European airlines implemented the so-called “4-eye rule”, which required that 2 persons must be in the cockpit at all times, as the European Aviation Safety Agency had recommended it. One year after its introduction, EASA carried out an industry-wide survey to assess the effectiveness of the measure. The majority of the industry, including some 3000 pilots, spoke out against it, as they confirmed that this procedure introduces new safety and security risks. Based on the survey results, EASA therefore decided to amend its recommendation. See ECA’s position paper here.
