Permanent Loss of Licence & Insurances

In 2014, a new European legislation was published on medical and licensing: Part-Med and Acceptable Means of Compliance (AMC). Generally speaking, this text was a good thing for pilots, as medical criteria were relaxed, which meant that some pilots were able to get their medical back for cases for which they had or would have lost their licence permanently in the past.

However, the new text prompted a new problem: since the “permanent loss of licence” is no more defined (only the “temporary loss of licence”), some insurers refuse to pay for conditions that obviously lead to a permanent loss of licence. We are in close contact with the chief of the BCAA’s Medical Department (Dr Van Brabant), and with APPN to find a solution for the pilots who will never be able to get their licence back.
