Legal does not mean Safe

In August 2015, the French accident investigation body (BEA) released its final report on the Hermes Airlines’ Airbus A321 SX-BHS accident (2013). This report points out almost everything that is going wrong in today’s aviation industry: fatigue, training issues, shortcomings in CRM, lack of safety culture, commercial pressure on pilot decision-making, inadequate oversight by authorities, among others. The 212-page report contains a noteworthy, but sad, confession:“Although complying with the regulations in force, the management choices that limited to minimum conformity with regulations exposed the airline to an increased risk of accident.” Legal, therefore, does not mean safe. And Just Safety Culture and Safety Management System take on their full meaning. It is time for the industry to wake up: more and more airlines start applying the same “low-cost model” and we now have a proof that it is dangerous.
