Ethiopian Airlines leaves Brussels Airport

After our press release of 11 September and many letters and discussions with Cabinet Galant, Ethiopian Airlines finally decided to leave Brussels Airport a couple of months ago. BeCA welcomed this announcement, as we have always defended employment in Belgium. Whilst some media were talking about 400 jobs created thanks to the cargo airline, BeCA proved that this figure was totally irrealistic. Indeed, the 20 weekly flights departing from Liege airport only created 7 full-time jobs. Considering that Ethiopian was a direct competitor to TNT Airways on the global cargo, the granting of traffic rights to Ethiopian would de facto have threatened +- 200 jobs in Belgium (pilots and ground-handlers, coming from all parts of Belgium). For BeCA, it is important that our government promotes fair employment in Belgium and defends the interests of Belgium-based airlines.
