BeCA NOTAM: Five good reasons to become a candidate at the next Social Elections

Dear BeCA member,

In May 2024, social elections will be held in every airline based in Belgium to elect employee representatives at the company Works Council and the Health and Safety Committee.

Only general workers can present candidates to these elections because by law all categories of employees must be represented by the trade union.  It means that BeCA can’t directly propose pilot candidates.

But you, as a BeCA member, have at least five good reasons to become a candidate through a union:

  1. As a pilot working “on the field”, you know very well how bad or good your company’s daily operations perform. You know how to improve conditions for the company’s and your colleagues’ benefit.
  2. Being a BeCA member means you already care about safety and professional attitude, about your future and the future of the pilot profession. Becoming a candidate through a union to promote those values inside your company will allow you to become a positive force influencing improvements.
  3. You work for an aviation company. As a pilot, YOU are the expert. And, as a BeCA member, you are just a phone call away from the BeCA Industrial Working Group and IFALPA and ECA experts. They are ready to help you in any technical aviation matter and provide legal support when unions can’t.
  4. For a practical reason: as a union representative, you can be released from duty during your working time. Meeting days can be counted as working days. Isn’t it an efficient way of working as a pilot representative for the benefit of the pilot profession?
  5. For another practical reason: election candidates are protected by law against dismissal. You will be able to professionally disagree with your management without fearing for your job. And you will have to be respected as a partner, with the full support of the national unions and from BeCA, ECA & IFALPA.
