On 5 October, the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) released a Safety Information Bulletin on the transport of lithium batteries as cargo. The paper acknowledges the dangers resulting from the transportation of large quantities of lithium batteries, which have been recognised as the causes of uncontrolled fires in cargo that led to 3 accidents between 2006 and 2011. EASA makes a series of recommendations, including that operators should conduct a safety risk assessment before starting carriage of lithium batteries. They advise also national authorities to include this in their oversight program. You can download the full SIB here.
