ICAO Prohibits Lithium-Ion Cargo Shipments on Passenger Aircraft

Cockpit Flash articles
In our last two Cockpit Flash, we informed you about BeCA/IFALPA long-standing position on the transportation of Lithium-Ion batteries and our demand for better rules in this respect. On 22 February 2016, the ICAO Council decided to prohibit the shipment of lithium-ion batteries on passenger aircraft. The prohibition, which is an interim one, is based on extensive research about the safety risks related to the transportation of large quantities of lithium-ion batteries. We have been waiting for and advocating for that decision for a long time and we are happy that, thanks to the work of our International association – among others – ICAO finally took that decision. In its Press Release of 26 February, IFALPA stresses, though, that more work is needed to improve safety for shipments of these batteries on cargo aircraft.
